How to Read a Football Form Guide (W, D, L Explained)

A form guide is a quick summary of a team's recent results. It is one of the first things punters look at, and it feeds into most football predictions, including ours.
What the letters mean
- W means a win.
- D means a draw.
- L means a loss.
A form line such as WWDLW shows the last five matches: three wins, a draw and a loss. Check which end is the most recent result, because some sites list the latest match first and others put it last.
Look beyond the letters
- Home and away. A team can be unbeaten at home and poor on the road. Split the form by venue when you can.
- Goals scored and conceded. Three 1-0 wins and three 4-1 wins look the same in letters but tell different stories about goals markets.
- Who they played. Beating the bottom three is not the same as beating the top three.
- Competitions. Cup games against lower-league sides can flatter a team's form.
- Team news. A run of wins with the first-choice striker may not continue if they are injured.
How much form should you trust?
Five or six matches is a small sample. Form is most useful when it agrees with other signals, such as league position, goal records and head-to-head history. A single bad result for a strong side often matters less than it looks.
