Over/Under 2.5 Goals Explained: How the Goals Market Works

The over/under 2.5 goals market is about the total number of goals in a match, scored by both teams together. The result does not matter.
How it settles
- Over 2.5 wins when there are 3 or more goals.
- Under 2.5 wins when there are 2 or fewer goals.
The line ends in .5 because a match cannot have half a goal. That means there is always a winner and a loser, with no refund for landing exactly on the line.

Like most football markets, it is normally settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count.
Other goal lines
- Over 1.5 needs 2 or more goals. It comes in more often, so the odds are lower.
- Over 3.5 needs 4 or more goals. It happens less often, so the odds are higher.
Choosing a line is a trade-off between how likely the outcome is and how much it pays. Neither side of that trade-off is "safe".
What matters for a goals pick
- Goals for and against. Average goals scored and conceded by each team, ideally split into home and away games.
- Expected goals. The quality of chances created and allowed is often a better guide than a few recent scorelines.
- Styles of play. Two attacking sides with open defences point one way; a strong defence against a low-scoring attack points the other.
- Context. Rotation, weather, fixture congestion and what each team needs from the game all affect tempo.
